Careers Information

Careers education, Information, Advice & Guidance (CEIAG)

At King David High School we believe that young people’s careers are forged out of their experience, progress and achievements in learning and work. We believe that all young people benefit from a planned curriculum or programme of activities to help them make curriculum choices that are right for them and to develop the personal resources and readiness that will enable them to manage their careers throughout their lives.

Here at King David High School we are highly committed to providing our students with information, advice and guidance to help them make effective decisions and choices about their future careers plans and next steps, especially at post-16 and post-18.

Our aims is to:-

  • Provide comprehensive information and advice
  • Inspire young people about their future prospects
  • Help them to make progress and achieve
  • Meet their career development needs
  • Enable them to make realistic and well informed career decisions and transitions.

 Our Commitment

King David High School is committed to providing a planned programme of careers education and information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) for all pupils and students in Years 7-13 in partnership with professional career’s advisers employed by the local authority (for targeted students).  The school also buys in independent and impartial guidance services provided by the Matrix approved Career Connect.

In order to do this The CEIAG programme at King David High School is delivered to all students through a variety of methods that follow The 8 Gatsby Benchmarks, developed through the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

An overview

In years 7 and 8 careers guidance is built into the PSHE Programme and delivered during National Careers Week.   Our starting point is to raise awareness of the breadth of careers options that are available and the various routes to them, assembly time is also used to focus on themes relating to work place skills.

In Year 9, awareness is raised about course options. At this early stage, the most important point to bear in mind is that whatever a student’s career plans are, all employers will want to see good GCSE grades across a wide range of subjects.   This is delivered to students using a variety of methods.

In year 10 our focus is on preparing students early for the myriad of complex decisions they will have to take in Year Eleven whilst also preparing them for GCSE exams.  Once again we use a variety of methods to deliver this careers information and advice.

In year 11 additional to the careers information and advice received by guest speakers and as part of our PSHE programme.  All our students have at least one 1:1 careers meeting with our specialist careers adviser, Mrs. Karen Meagher from the Career Connect Service.

Students in our Sixth Form receive specialist advice and support in relation to the application process to University and for routes to high level apprenticeships.   This is delivered using a wide range of methods which involves talks by employers, apprenticeships providers and visits to universities.

 Careers Fair

Every year, we hold a Careers Fair.  This year this event took place during an afternoon and was open to all students and parents from Year 7 upwards.  Over 40 exhibitors came along ranging from local employers, apprenticeship providers to local universities and colleges.  We also had some of our parents come in and talk to our pupils about their own experiences and career choices.
